Veronika is formally trained as a civil engineer, holding a license to make decisions and judgements about how the land is formed (PE License #0062790).
Working in rural and urban settings, Veronika is constantly confronted by how quickly stories disappear. She has been onsite with excavators digging up civic infrastructure systems placed for reasons now forgotten: wooden pipes to neighborhoods long gone; remnants of foundations buried beneath soil.
She uses photography and writing to reveal our relationship with place, encouraging curiosity about the forces that have formed the present moment. Her work asks us to walk with empathy - not needing the story to be our own to care to take care. Mundanity of place is where we find belonging and reconciliation, for how we live our days is how we live our lives.
Veronika believes infrastructure, civic and otherwise, should serve as scaffolding: a temporary, modifiable, deconstructable method to reinstate social stability. Participating in shaping our neighborhoods requires attention, curiosity, and integrity. It is not just the land, but the narrative we are building into.
